How Pilates Works
Pilates works by exercising muscles that keep the body stable and supported. These muscles lie deep in the stomach, pelvic floor, back and hips and often are much weaker than they should be. Developing these muscles by doing Pilates results in a solid base to the body. This solid base supports joints, improves posture and allows great power production thus gaining many benefits to the body. Pilates also works by focusing the mind to be more aware of the body and how it moves.
Benefits of Pilates
The benefits of Pilates are numerous and as well as the normal benefits of exercising, such as improved fitness and toning the body, Pilates has the following specific benefits:
- Increased core strength
- Improved posture
- Reduced pain
- Improved flexibility
- Improved sporting performance
- Reduction in the risk of injury
- Increased speed of recovery post injury
What to Expect from Pilates
You should expect to become familiar with the exercises and techniques of Pilates after just a couple of sessions. In terms of strength improvements you should see results from Pilates within 8 sessions, which if you do some practice at home as well as in the clinic this can just be matter of weeks. As you get stronger you can increase the difficulty of the exercises and move onto more advanced Pilates work. It is a fun, safe but challenging form of exercise with many health and sporting benefits.
